How caregiver child access works in Elly

Understand all-child and selected-child invitations in Elly, how they differ from planning permissions, and what to verify when a caregiver joins.

Child access determines which children a caregiver is invited to work with. Planning permission is a separate control for helping manage the plan. Choose child access in the caregiver invitation form, then review the connected caregiver’s planning permission in settings.

Separate the two access questions

Start by asking which children are part of the caregiver’s arrangement. Then ask whether the caregiver should help create or change family plans. These are different questions. An adult can be part of the care team without automatically having the same planning role as a parent or partner. Elly’s caregiver invitation exposes the child selection, while connected member settings expose planning access. Explain both choices to the person joining so their expected responsibilities match the setup instead of discovering a mismatch during a busy handoff.

Choose the relevant children in the invitation

Open the caregiver invitation form from Settings → Caregivers. Under Child access, choose All children or the relevant individual children. Check names carefully when children have similar names or when the household has recently added another profile. Do this before creating the invitation so you can review the intended scope while the form is still open. The screenshot below illustrates the available choices. It does not describe the access for any visitor’s family, and clicking it cannot change an app account.

Use the care arrangement to guide the choice

Consider a caregiver who covers one child’s after-school afternoons while another adult cares for a younger sibling. Selected-child access may fit that arrangement. A nanny caring for both children throughout the same shift may need access to both. These are illustrative examples, not rules about which permissions every household should use. Discuss the actual arrangement and check the resulting setup together. If the responsibilities later change, review the member settings and available access controls rather than assuming the original invitation remains appropriate forever.

Review planning permission after the person joins

Open the caregiver list and find the connected adult. Review the Can plan control with the family member who manages permissions. The ability to help maintain a plan is separate from an invitation being accepted. A caregiver who is expected to create arrangements needs the appropriate permission and any required subscription access. If a control is unavailable, check the account’s role and plan before trying another path. Creating duplicate profiles or sharing a parent’s sign-in would make the arrangement harder to understand.

Check the experience with the caregiver

After joining, ask the caregiver to open the relevant child and locate the information needed for their work. Confirm which adult will maintain calendar arrangements and who will record completed care. You do not need to invent a real event just to check a screen: walk through the controls and explain where the next actual update should go. If the view does not match the expected child access, stop and review the family and member setup. A familiar name on a screen does not by itself confirm that every permission is correct.

Revisit access when the arrangement changes

A new sibling, a different care window or the end of a regular arrangement are useful moments to review membership and permissions. Use the controls available to the family account inside Elly, and contact support if the intended change is not available. Do not assume that changing a permission removes copies of information someone already received outside the app. This tutorial explains the visible setup choices, not a guarantee about every data-sharing scenario. Keep the working agreement clear so people know which information and plans they are responsible for maintaining.

Common questions

Is planning access the same as child access?

No. Child selection and the Can plan permission address different parts of the care arrangement.

Where do I choose selected children?

Use Child access when creating a caregiver invitation. The form includes All children and individual child choices.

Do partners use the same invitation role?

Elly manages partners or guardians separately from caregivers. Choose the role appropriate to the relationship.

Can the website change someone’s permissions?

No. Membership and permissions are managed inside the app by an account with the relevant access.

Parents. Nannies. One team.
